Bangalore: The Government will establish ayurvedic units in all its district hospitals in a phased manner, Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Ashok has said. Replying to M.P. Nadagouda in the Legislative Council on Monday, Mr. Ashok said there were 76 government ayurvedic hospitals in the State. The Government was supplying ayurvedic medicines to all its hospitals, he said. The Government was aware that ayurveda had been drawing attention of the western countries. A majority of the hospitals were located in urban areas. Although the Government wanted to set up ayurvedic hospitals in rural areas, people wanted allopathic treatment only, he said. Arun Machaiah said that though the Government had already established ayurvedic units in some of its district hospitals, it was supplying only allopathic medicines. Ayurvedic doctors working in such units could not take up medico-legal cases, he said. Mr. Ashok said the Centre was providing an annual grant of Rs. 9 crore to encourage ayurvedic treatment. The Government would provide ayurvedic medicines wherever required, he added.
