New in town: Visitors take a look at some of the paintings in Thapasiya Art Gallery in Puducherry.
PUDUCHERRY: The work of artist Almas Atiq, whose name means rare diamond, captures the glitter of a thousand diamonds on the calm surface of a sea on a Full Moon night. The painting is displayed at Thapasiya Art Gallery, which was recently inaugurated at 122, Canteen Street. “I run a boutique, do a little bit of event management and have just started making oil paintings. When they said a new gallery is being opened at Puducherry the image that came to my mind was that of a serene, calm place and that painting with water and light was the result,” Almas said. The walls of the gallery, which was inaugurated by Health Minister E. Valsaraj, are lined with Tanjore paintings and other works of art by artists Jayaprakash and Ranju. An art school was also inaugurated by Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan in the presence of Deputy Speaker A.V. Sreedharan. “We started this institution in Chennai seven years ago, and now have three branches with about 400 students. Our target group is children from the age of four and above and software engineers, doctors and housewives,” said Jayaprakash, who runs the art school in Chennai. The art school offers a variety of courses, including on Tanjore painting, oil painting, glass painting, charcoal shading, calligraphy and fabric painting. For further details, contact 0413-2260262.
