This Day That Age
The Government of India’s intention to pursue a generous policy in dealing with the aspirations of the Nagas was reiterated by Prime Minister Nehru in the Lok Sabha on July 23. Replying to the debate on the demands for grants for the External Affairs Ministry, the Prime Minister declared that there was no question of pursuing a vindictive policy against anyone, whether they were opposed to the Government or had indulged in deplorable acts of violence. “It is the Government’s desire to take as lenient a view as possible even in regard to criminal offences.” As regards the political demand of the Nagas, it was the Government’s view that the Nagas should be given as much autonomy as possible and the Constitution should be amended appropriately. All this could be done only by consultation. Mr. Nehru’s observations were interpreted as a fresh offer to the Naga leaders to abandon violence and come forward to discuss their political demands with the representatives of the Government.
