dated July 25, 1957 : Ministers’ cars

Mr. C. Subramaniam, Finance Minister, informed Mr. M. Jengal Reddiar and Mr. S. Ramaswami Thevar in the Madras Legislative Assembly on July 24 that four Chevrolet cars at a total cost of Rs.49,367.81 were purchased during 1956-57 for the use of Ministers. He said a car was replaced when it had run not less than 50,000 miles or earlier for special reasons which would be recorded in writing. The Minister said the maintenance cost of the four cars was Rs.689.84 in 1956 and Rs.2,257.20 up to May 1957. Answering supplementaries, the Minister said the purchase of the cars was more economical as they were obtained in “special circumstances arising out of the merger of Pondicherry with the Indian Union.” They saved over Rs.7,500 as they did not have to pay customs duty. “As a matter of fact, even if we bought a smaller car here (Madras), we would have had to pay more than what we paid for the Chevrolets.” The Minister explained, in reply to a question, that the 50,000 mile-limit for the disposal of a car was only the minimum limit. As a matter of fact, he changed his old car for a new one after it had run over a lakh of miles.
