The campaign

Remember what people said about Mr. Kalam initially? That a politician, not a technocrat, should have become President? It is political immaturity to prejudge Ms. Patil.

It was the vicious campaign launched by the BJP against her, for whatever reason, that made the presidential election nasty. Ms. Patil, though indirectly elected, is the representative of a majority of Indians. Whether the majority is right or wrong, only time will tell. We can only hope the majority decision is for the best.

George Easaw,

Idukki

What preceded the election was a matter of shame for the country. The office of the first Indian citizen was dragged into the dirty politics of our nation. The acrimonious campaign has drastically affected the highest constitutional post.

Siddharth Chaturvedi,

Lucknow
