Letters to the Editor
The craze for Harry Potter has been successfully promoted among Indian children by the Indian media which are overenthusiastic about showcasing anything that is foreign, however trivial. This has promoted the feeling that anything that comes from abroad is ‘cool’. On the other hand, the western media paint a negative picture of India by highlighting poverty, slums, and violence. Even the achievements of Indians are portrayed negatively unless the west stands to benefit from them, directly or indirectly. The Indian media’s tendency to exaggerate the achievements of westerners creates an overly positive impression of the west among Indians, particularly children, who hardly realise that most foreigners do not entertain a healthy attitude to Indian achievements. M.M. Bheri, Carmarthen, U.K.
