20 schoolchildren injured

Staff Reporter

UDUMALPET: More than 300 parents and villagers of Poolvadi on Tuesday blocked traffic on the Palladam-Udumalpet highway near Poolavadi following an accident in which 20 schoolchildren sustained injuries. A private bus proceeding to Palladam hit the school van with the children from behind. The van, which was stopped in front of the matriculation school, fell into a near-by pit.

The public and parents squatted on the road and refused to disperse for five hours despite appeals by the revenue and police authorities. They said the private bus operators were indulging in reckless driving and demanded that the authorities take action against them.

Later, the police dispersed them using mild force. Highways authorities immediately put up a speed breaker near the school. The injured students were treated at Udumalpet Government Hospital and a private hospital. Three children were referred to a Coimbatore hospital. Vehicles on the Udumalpet-Tirupur sector were diverted to another route.
