Bench stays order, lawyer freed

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association on Tuesday unanimously decided to boycott Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Uma Nath Singh.

Mr. Justice Singh had on Monday ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation to admit senior advocate Tahar Singh to a mental hospital in Agra after taking him into custody on the basis of a complaint filed by his wife before the local police here alleging that her husband “tortured” her. However, a Division Bench of the High Court late on Monday night stayed the order.

Bar Association president Anmol Rattan Sidhu told mediapersons that they would request Chief Justice Vijender Jain not to allot any court work to Mr. Justice Singh.

The advocates, who surrounded Mr. Justice Singh’s room and prevented people from entering, also demanded that “impeachment” proceedings be initiated against him.

They alleged that the impugned order had been passed against Mr. Tahar Singh as he had recently started a signature campaign demanding a discussion on the conduct of the judiciary.

PTI reports: Mr. Tahar Singh was brought back midway and released by the CBI on Tuesday after a Bench comprising Justices M.M. Kumar and Surya Kant stayed the controversial order.

A CBI team had taken Mr. Tahar Singh into custody and was proceeding to Agra to admit him to a mental hospital.

Justice Singh, while taking suo motu notice of a First Information Report lodged by the lawyer’s wife with the Chandigarh police, had also asked the CBI to take over the probe to “ensure fair investigation into the alle gations.”
