Soz attends Zahir Shah funeral

NEW DELHI: India lowered the national flag at half mast on government buildings and diplomatic missions on Tuesday as a mark of respect to the last King of Afghanistan Mohammad Zahir Shah, who died in Kabul on Monday.

He was 92 years old.

Union Minister for Water Resources Saifuddin Soz represented India at the funeral. He was accompanied by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman K. Rehman Khan, India’s Ambassador in Kabul Rakesh Sood, Joint Secretary in the External Affairs Ministry T.C.A. Raghavan and his personal secretary S.A. Baba.

The delegation offered its condolences to President Hamid Karzai on behalf of the Indian Government and the people.

King Zahir Shah strengthened relations between India and Afghanisatn when he was in power.

Medical facilities

As a gesture of goodwill, India extended all medical facilities to him when he was rushed to New Delhi in February 2004 for urgent treatment.
