Raje seeks outstanding fund for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan

Special Correspondent

Chief Minister writes to Union Minister Arjun Singh

‘Paucity of money was hampering the State Government’s plan to upgrade schools’

She draws attention to the proposed programme for universalisation of secondary education

JAIPUR: Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje on Tuesday called upon the Centre to release the outstanding amount of Rs.78.63 crore for implementation of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and approve a new programme for universalisation of secondary education. In a letter addressed to Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, Ms. Raje pointed out that the amount was due since the last financial year towards the Centre’s 75 per cent liability for implementing SSA. She said the paucity of money was hampering the State Government’s plan to upgrade schools and extend SSA’s benefits to them.

Ms. Raje said the Centre had sanctioned Rs.1,235.21 crore under SSA’s annual action plan and released Rs.751.38 crore towards its 75 per cent liability. As the amount was short by Rs.175.10 crore, the State Government could only execute an action plan worth Rs.1,106.32 crore. The Chief Minister said the HRD Ministry should immediately compensate for the shortfall of Rs.78.36 crore to enable the State Government to implement SSA effectively and achieve universalisation of elementary education.

Ms. Raje also drew Mr. Singh’s attention to the proposed programme for universalisation of secondary education, saying the State Government was waiting for the Centre’s approval in principle to the plan for the current financial year. “In the absence of sufficient budget, the State Government is not able to upgrade 150 middle schools for which I made the announcement in the Budget,” she said.
