Puducherry: The strike by anganwadi staff of Puducherry demanding the withdrawal of their en masse transfer orders entered the 23rd day on Tuesday. Puducherry Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy convened a meeting with the representatives of the Anganawadi Staff Association and also the Confederation of Associations of Government Employees in his chamber on Monday in a bid to resolve the stalemate. He made it clear that the staff should honour the transfer orders. He said already 111 staff had joined duty. There are totally 571 anganwadi staff spread over different centres in five zones in Puducherry. Mr. Kandasamy told the staff that their demands would be looked into in two weeks’ time after they join duty in their new posts. Representatives of the Confederation told him that although transfer as such was not applicable for the anganwadi staff and -- though they now enjoy the status of government employees unlike in other States -- they insisted that transfer orders should be free from ‘irregularities.’ Proper modalities could be worked out through counselling so that staff would not face any difficulty. They also said that such counselling for transfers to new centres should be taken up immediately through fresh orders. But this was not agreeable to the Government as it insisted that the staff should accept the earlier transfer orders.
