PANAJI: The Goa Government has decided to keep on hold the release of new power connections for commercial and industrial consumers in view of the poor power situation prevailing in the State. Power Minister Aleixo Sequeira disclosed this in the State Assembly on Monday while replying to a discussion on demands for grants of the Power Department. The State faces a power deficit only during peak hours, the Minister said. Though Goa was supposed to be getting an allocation of 403 MW from the Central power grids, in reality it was 311 MW, Mr. Sequeira said. Reduced
He said that five units of the power generating system from the Central sector were undergoing annual overhauling this monsoon, thereby reducing the supply to Goa. Mr. Sequeira admitted that the State Electricity Department would not be able to provide power for the proposed Special Economic Zones.
