Hearing in dam case adjourned

J. Venkatesan

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday posted for August 9 the hearing on an application filed by the Tamil Nadu Government for a direction to the Centre to deploy Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at the Mullaperiyar dam site following reports of damage caused to the parapet wall of the dam by miscreants.

A three-judge Bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice R.V. Raveendran and Justice Dalveer Bhandari adjourned the hearing on a request from counsel for Kerala.

Tamil Nadu had filed a suit praying for an interim stay of the operation of a law passed by Kerala in 2006 (constituting the Dam Safety Authority to regulate the dams in the State) inasmuch as it was made applicable to the dam. However, Kerala, in its reply, opposed Tamil Nadu’s application stating that Tamil Nadu had unilaterally withdrawn from the talks.
