KBA to revive Champions Trophy

KOCHI: The Champions Trophy State inter-club basketball championship is back after a ten-year break. The event, which will pick the club to represent Kerala in the Federation Cup, will be held at the St Thomas floodlit courts at Kuriannur, Pathanamthitta, from August 7 to 11.

“We last conducted the Champions Trophy in 1997. And since we couldn’t host the event after that, we authorised the winners of some private tournaments to go for the Federation Cup. But there were some protests about this, so we have decided to revive the championship,” said P.J. Sunny, the seasoned Kerala Basketball Association official on Tuesday evening.

Some of the best clubs of the State, including Central Excise, BSNL, KSEB in the men’s section and KSEB, Assumption College and St Xavier’s College in women’s, will figure in the five-day event. The Federation Cup will be held in Orissa later this year. – Principal Correspondent
