TNPL, a caring neighbour in Karur

KARUR: The corporate social responsibility of profit-making Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) reflects in the Rs. One-crore allocation during the current year to take up social amelioration activities in the Kagithapuram area where its paper mill is located.

According to its Managing Director, V. Moorthy, TNPL has founded a trust and has contributed Rs. one crore for taking up community development and service activities in Karur district. The services included provision of drinking water to neighbouring habitats, laying of roads, sanitation, extending education aid to the underprivileged and fostering Tamil language and culture studies among students.

Besides, five farmers, who have been utilising its treated effluents for irrigating their fields, will be sent on a study tour to other States where similar activities are under way.

The company has adopted five poor children of Onvaikkalmedu for providing free education at TNPL Matriculation School.

Besides, Rs. 50 lakh had been earmarked for organising various social activities to “take the company closer to the people in its neighbourhood,” Mr. Moorthy said. Free and specialised medical camps were being conducted and one special health camp would be held every month in the surrounding villages during the current year. Last year, the TNPL spent Rs. 40 lakh on social service activities.
