Assets: names of errant MLAs to be made public

Chitradurga: Lokayukta Santosh Hegde has announced that the names of 276 MLAs, who have not furnished details of their assets by July 24, will be made public.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, he said most of the MLAs had not given details of their assets properly. Therefore, the Lokayukta had asked them to resubmit details of their assets. “If the MLAs do not agree to it, we would be forced make pubic their names,” he added.

The Lokayukta said that a charge sheet had been file against Chennapattana MLA for allegedly giving false information regarding his assets. Mr. Hegde said he had given up asking the Government to grant more powers to the Lokayukta. He had discussed the matter with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy thrice. But he had only received assurances from the Chief Minister. sThough he admitted that it was not possible to eradicate corruption, he said laws could be enforced to minimise it. On the delay in disposing of cases pending before the Lokayukta, he said the cases had to be disposed of by district judges only. But the Lokayukta was facing a problem of shortage of judges. On illegal mining, Mr. Hegde said it was an uphill task. “The mining lobby is deep rooted, which has made the task of controlling it difficult. By strict direction to police and officials of the Geology Department, we are trying to curb it,” he said.
