Indian Institute of Handloom to be set up at Bargarh

BHUBANESWAR: Apparel Export and Promotion Council (AEPC), an organisation under Union Ministry of Textiles, launched its 22nd Apparel Training and Designing Centre (ATDC) in Bhubaneswar here on Tuesday.

Inaugurating the ATDC here at Rasulgarh Industrial Estate, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the State was home to lakhs of weavers and the Centre would help hone their skills.

The Bhubaneswar centre would offer 13 courses including diploma in apparel manufacturing technology, textile designing, fashion sampling coordination and garment constructions. The institute would have 30 students each in all departments. The AEPC had spent Rs 1.5 crores on developing the Bhubaneswar centre.

The AEPC chairman said the Centre would work for women empowerment, entrepreneur skill development, project consultancy and in setting up apparel parks.

He said the council had plans to set up 50 such centres all over the country by December 2007.

The Chief Minister said that attempts were being made to set up the Indian Institute of Handloom at Bargarh and formulate a State textile policy to shape the development in the handloom sector.

State Textile Minister Golak Bihari Nayak, Chief Secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy and Secretary of Textile and Handloom department Anita Agnihotri were present on the occasion.
