CPI(M) seeks funds for desilting tanks and supply channels

PUDUKOTTAI: The Ponnamaravathy block wing of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the State Government to bifurcate Tirumayam taluk, carving out a new one with Ponnamaravathy as headquarters.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at a meeting in Ponnamaravathy on Monday. Villagers from places including Karaiyur, Oliamangalam and Nagarapatti were finding it tough to reach the taluk office at Tirumayam for obtaining Government assistance and certificates, it said.

The meeting also adopted a resolution urging the Education Department to upgrade the girls high school in Ponnamaravathy to a higher secondary school. Although the villagers had deposited Rs. two lakh with the department for upgrading process six months ago, it had not been executed till now.

Another resolution urged the Government to sanction special funds for deepening and desilting tanks and supply channels in Ponnamaravathy. Resolutions calling for immediate repairing of pipelines at Tamil Nadu Housing Board quarters for ensuring supply of drinking water, and cleaning of drainage channels in Ponnamaravathy were also adopted.

The Alankudi MLA, S. Rajasekaran, said that Ponnamaravathy and the surrounding villages had an equal number of family cards, electorate strength and population as that of Tirumayam and its neighbouring hamlets.

The party’s Tirumayam taluk unit secretary, A.L. Raj, said that several agitations had been launched in support of the demand for bifurcation of the taluk. The taluk executive committee member, C. Sakthi, and the State executive member, K.S. Azhagarsamy, spoke.
