HYDERABAD: Former Minister Mohd Jani assumed office as Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council on Tuesday. Mr. Jani, who was elected unanimously by the members, was accompanied to the Chair by Finance Minister K. Rosaiah and others after Council Chairman A. Chakrapani announced his election. Members from all political parties, barring the TDP MLCs who were suspended for the day, greeted Mr. Jani on his election to the post. While senior members recalled their association with Mr. Jani over the past 20 years, the newly elected MLCs praised him for his friendly attitude as well as his ability to raise issues of public importance. In his response, the deputy chairman said he would take all the MLCs, cutting across political lines, together and asked them to extend their cooperation in the smooth conduct of the House. Dr G. Kuthuhalamma, a Congress member representing Vipanjeri in Chittoor district, was formally declared elected Deputy Speaker of the Assembly on Tuesday. This was announced Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy, who said she would be felicitated in the House on Wednesday.
