Taken for a ride: Joy Wright showing her husband K.V. Rama Rao’s photograph in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
HYDERABAD: Things are not looking bright for Joy Wright, an American who came all the way to Hyderabad searching for her husband. Ms. Wright said that her husband K.V. Rama Rao borrowed 148,000 US dollars from her and disappeared almost a year ago. The 56-year-old American woman sought police help in locating her husband, but their efforts have not yielded any result so far. A visibly distraught Ms. Wright is keeping her fingers crossed staying at a private guesthouse in Banjara Hills. Ms. Wright claimed that she got introduced to her husband through a person named Deepak Reddy. She got married in Arya Pratinidhi Sabha in 2001. She left for the US and got him a visa. Though Rama Rao too migrated to the US, she claimed that he had no intention of working in the US despite her efforts to get him a job as a security officer. In their five years of marriage, Rama Rao allegedly borrowed $148,000 from her on the plea that he was investing the money in real estate ventures in Hyderabad. He had assured her that the returns would be high and that he would return the money in two years. Ms. Wright had even mortgaged her home in the US and transferred the money to his bank account. “I gave him the money as I was confident he would return. But he began avoiding me,” she complained. Her emails were never answered and calls spurned. Worried over this, Ms. Wright flew down to Hyderabad and began searching for him since July second week. “We have been looking out for him for the past two weeks, but in vain,” says Jang Jaswal, the American’s friend who is helping her locate Rama Rao. The elusive man was believed to be a resident of Saroornagar. She also requested the police to arrest Rama Rao for cheating her. A complaint was also lodged against him at the Saroornagar police station.
