TUs discuss management proposal Revival of smelter unit bleak
KOCHI: A joint general body meeting of trade unions at Hindalco (formerly Indal) will be held on Saturday at the Aluminium Factory Workers’ Union office, Alupuram. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. K. Babu, MLA, and K.N. Gopinath, convener of Save Hindalco Trade Union Samithi, will preside at the meeting. The smelter unit of the Hindalco, was shut down on August 1, 2003, due to the rise in electricity charges. More than 300 employees in the unit were asked to “stay at home” by the company management and the future of about 100 contract workers were in jeopardy in the wake of the decision. The trade unions will meet on Saturday in the wake of a meeting convened by Industries Minister Elamaram Karim in Thiruvananthapuram on the same day. The meeting would consider solutions for the present crisis, said K.N. Gopinath in a statement here on Tuesday. Early last month, a meeting of trade unions at the Aditya Birla group company had discussed a proposal by the management to set up a new extrusion press and to offer ‘golden handshake’ to about 150 workers. The company management decided that it would not be possible to revive the smelter unit and it proposed setting up a new extrusion press at an investment of Rs.50 crore.
