NEW DELHI: Fifteen more eco-friendly CNG buses will be added to the existing 15 deployed as replacement for the banned cycle-rickshaws in the Capital’s Chandni Chowk area. According to Deputy Commisioner (City) Vijay Singh, talks are under way with a transport agency to induct 15 more buses into the fleet. “Once we get these extra vehicles, we will start the ladies’ special bus and also make some changes to the existing buses.” Mr. Singh said there were plans to increase the size of the foot-board and widen the door of the buses to five feet from the existing 3.5 feet. This would facilitate easy entry and exit. The fares would be revised once the new buses are added to the fleet, he added. However, some residents of the Walled City of Delhi are unhappy with the new bus service. According to Ballimaran Residents’ Welfare Association president Mohammad Nasir, these buses -- started primarily for the convenience of school children, women and old people -- do not halt at the designated bus stops. “Passengers are required to walk to their destinations from the point where they are made to get off as there are no cycle-rickshaws. Moreover, people standing at the door of the buses makes it difficult for school children to get down at their desired stop,” he said. The RWA members have also demanded fare reduction from Rs.5 to Rs.3.
