Willing to part-finance project

Bank to extend assistance of Rs. 2,250 crore

Project bridges ayacut gap of four lakh acres

HYDERABAD: Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah has announced that the World Bank, which expressed willingness to part finance modernisation of Nagarjunasagar project, had given its go ahead for commencement of works on the project.

While it was likely to take time for the Bank to approve the loan, the Government was informed that it could commence modernisation works and the amount spent would be reimbursed later, he said. The Minister was replying to a query by Congress member Mohd Jani during the Question Hour in the Legislative Council on Tuesday.

Assistance

He said that the Bank would extend assistance to the tune of Rs. 2,250 crore to the Rs. 3,500 crore project that was aimed at modernisation, bridging the ayacut gap of over four lakh acres. Temporary repair works on Nagarjunasagar Left and Right canals had already been taken up with estimated Rs. 36.01 crores. Replying to a query, he said the Government announced its stand on providing 195 tmc ft of water to Nalgonda districts and works in this regard were underway.

Offences

Home Minister K. Jana Reddy said that there was three to six per cent marginal increase in the cognizable offences in the State. While it was advisable to ensure one policeman per every 500 population, the ratio in the State was 938:1. Initiatives like periodical training to police force, ensuring quick response and creation of awareness about crime among the people were helping in controlling the incidence of crime. Efforts were underway to introduce community policing that envisaged involvement of people, he added.
