Favours to party workers criticised

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The Opposition in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday took strong exception during question hour to what it described as discrimination in apportioning projects in different areas under the NABARD scheme and held Public Works and Energy Minister H.D. Revanna responsible for it.

There was a heated argument when Mr. Revanna told J.C. Madhuswamy (JD-U) that sometimes party workers had to be favoured while allocating schemes. Mr. Madhuswamy, supported by B.R. Patil (suspended JD-S member), Abhayachandra, Umapathy and Dhruvanarayana (Congress) and G.V. Sriram Reddy (CPI-M) questioned the propriety of ignoring MLAs. Mr. Madhuswamy told the Minister that even if he wanted to favour party workers, he should not do it in constituencies represented by Opposition members.

Home Minister M.P. Prakash came to Mr. Revanna’s rescue saying that the latter had only said ‘party workers’ without naming any party. Sometimes the Government had to oblige workers and leaders of other parties as well.

There was a slanging-match between M.P. Venkatesh and H.C. Balakrishna (JD-S) and Mr. Abhayachandra, which angered Deputy Speaker Y.S. Gopalakrishna. Mr. Gopalakrishna admonished them and told them to maintain the dignity of the House.
