CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Tuesday urged the State Government to take necessary steps to end problems related to admissions to professional colleges.
In a statement here, she said “inconsistency” in the State Government’s policies had lead to economically disadvantaged students facing the threat of losing the chance of getting seats under the Government quota in the self-financing colleges.
Even while enacting a law to streamline admissions and fee structure in the self-financing professional colleges last year, the Government should have made it clear that admissions under the management quota should be done under the single window system.
Ponmudy’s response
Reacting to the statement issued by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to end problems relating to admissions, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy said during the AIADMK regime, the quota for self-financing (Minority) institutions was 70 per cent and the remaining Government quota.
Similarly, in the non-minority self-financing institutions, 50 per cent quota was there for the institution as well as the Government.
However, the present Government had changed the quota from 30 per cent in self-financing (Minority) institutions to 50 per cent. In the non-minority self-financing institutions, the Government quota was raised from 50 to 65 per cent.
Dr. Ponmudy said the DMK Government had, within the first three months, enacted a law that the management quota should be filled through centralised counselling.
