TIRUVANNAMALAI: Three persons belonging to the Somavarkulam area of Tiruvannamalai including two women died in an outbreak of diarrhoea caused by various factors, including the contamination of drinking water.
More than 100 persons from Somavarkulam and the slum areas of Somasippadi got admitted to the Government Hospital, Tiruvannamalai with symptoms of diarrhoea in the last four days.
One of them, Sangothiammal (56) of Somavarkulam died after discharge from hospital on Sunday.
Two more persons, Mariammal (60) and Chinnakkannu (62) of the same area died later.
New cases of diarrhoea are being reported in the hospital everyday.
Tiruvannamalai Collector Satyabrata Sahoo told The Hindu that the outbreak was due to the consumption of contaminated water.
The outbreak had been confined to two places in Tiruvannamalai town and two slum areas of Somasippadi on the outskirts of Tiruvannamalai, where people lived in close clusters of houses.
The contamination had occurred owing to the leakage in the drinking water pipelines. This practice results in the contamination of drinking water owing to the mixing of rainwater. Another reason for diarrhoea was the consumption of mangos ripened artificially using calcium carbide.
