CHENNAI: The 74th birth anniversary of G. Rajkumar, the late chairperson of St.John’s Educational Trust, was celebrated here on Monday with S. Mohan, retired Judge of the Supreme Court, appealing to students to consider their education as a great asset.
Education should help them acquire good character. Students should have penchant for social service. Paying tributes to Rajkumar, he described him as “a great and illustrious educationist.” He believed in principles. He devoted his entire life to students, Mr. Mohan said.
R. Nallakannu, a national executive committee member of the CPI, who spoke on “Newspaper and its social responsibilities” said the press should help protect democracy and human rights. It was the responsibility of newspapers to pinpoint shortcomings, wherever they were. However, it was a debatable point whether newspapers were doing so. The rapid developments in science and technology and communication revolution should not destroy the country’s rich culture. Instead, they should be used for societal development.
Speaking on “Secularism, the foundation of spiritualism,” V. Devasagayam, Bishop in Madras, CSI, said love for God and love for people formed the substance of all religions. Religious pluralism should be celebrated. The commonality in different religions should be used to bring people together and for societal progress.
Sakuntala Rajkumar, chairperson of the Trust, released the application for “Dr. G. Rajkumar Best Teacher Award-2007.” R. Kishore Kumar, Senior Principal, SJIRS, said as a youngster, Rajkumar had progressive thinking. He said plans are afoot to start a college of education in memory of Rajkumar and St. John’s School of Legal Studies.
