VHP plans agitation on Ram Setu issue
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) is trying to bring together sadhus and ‘sants’ on a single platform to oppose what it describes as the plan to destroy the ancient Ram Setu.
VHP general secretary Pravin Togadia has promised that on this issue — unlike that of the demand for Ram temple at Ayodhya — he will not allow any political party to hijack the agitation.
The organisation is opposing the Sethusamudram project if it means destruction of the undersea ridge connecting India with Sri Lanka, which it believes is the remnant of the “setu (bridge)” constructed by Lord Rama to help his army of monkeys cross into the island country to save Sita from Ravana.
Some hundreds of Hindu priests will gather on Wednesday and Thursday at the Ramlila Maidan here to make the demand.
