TN’s good show continues

S.R. Suryanarayan

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu’s overwhelming presence in the last four stage was the feature of the day’s proceedings on Tuesday in the National squash championship at the ICL academy courts.

In the inter-State competition at the end of the league phase, Tamil Nadu ‘A’ qualified to face Services while in the other semifinal, Tamil Nadu ‘B’ will take on Delhi ‘A’.

Such was the strength in the Tamil Nadu ‘A’ team that its top player Saurav Ghosal’s services were not needed to carve out a 3-0 win over Rajasthan ‘A’. Parth Sharma, Naresh Kumar and Harinder Pal Singh contributed in the victory.

Three-team affair

The women’s event was reduced to a three-team affair with the withdrawal of Jammu and Kashmir. In the one match played, Tamil Nadu had an easy 3-0 win over Uttar Pradesh. Incidentally Tamil Nadu ‘B’ is the third team in this event.

The doubles championship went on expected lines with the top two pairs, both from Tamil Nadu, Saurav and Harinder as also Parth and Naresh cruising into the last four.

The interest in this section was if a third pair from Tamil Nadu would also qualify. A. Parthiban and Ravi Dixit came close to doing that but the Services pair of Vikas Jangra and Shakthi Singh edged them out in the five-game tussle.

The match as such had little to offer in terms of quality with the degree of mistakes making the difference. In the deciding game in particular both Ravi and Parthiban committed unforced errors to loosen their grip.

The results:

League: Pool ‘A’: Tamil Nadu ‘A’ bt Rajasthan ‘A’ 3-0; Pool ‘B’: Delhi ‘A’ bt Chandigarh ‘A’ 3-0; Rajasthan ‘B’ bt U.P. ‘BR 17; 2-1; Pool ‘C’: Tamil Nadu ‘B’ bt Chandigarh ‘B’ 3-0; Pool ‘D’: West Bengal bt Karnatak 3-0; Services bt Haryana 3-0.

Final league position (number one team qualifies): Pool A: 1. Tamil Nadu ‘A’ 4 wins; 2. Rajasthan ‘A’ 3 wins; 3. U.P. ‘A’ 2 wins; 4. Uttrakhand 1 win; 5. J and K no win. Pool B: 1. Delhi ‘A’ 3 wins; 2. Chandigarh ‘A’ 2 wins; 3. Rajasthan ‘B; 1 win; 4. U.P. ‘B’ no win. Pool C: 1. Tamil Nadu ‘B’ 3 wins; 2. Delhi ‘B’ 2 wins; 3. Chandigarh ‘B 217; 1 win; J and K ‘A’ no win. Pool ‘D’: 1. Services 3 wins; 2. West Bengal 2 wins; 3. Haryana 1 win; Karnataka no win.

Women: round robin league: Tamil Nadu ‘A’ bt U.P. 3-0.
