Vignesh stuns Shokeen

CHENNAI: Davis Cupper Shokeen failed to make his maiden visit to the city as a senior professional a memorable one as he lost to qualifier P.C. Vignesh 6-4, 7-6(5) in the first round of the GNC-KCG Verghese ITF Futures tennis tournament at the Gandhinagar Club courts here on Tuesday.

Shokeen just couldn’t get his act together. The fifth seed found it difficult to get his first serves in. Moreover, his groundstrokes deserted him in crucial points. However the 19-year-old found his groove in the second set and fought his way back before losing a close tie-breaker. The match lasted two hours and 12 minutes.

Later in the evening, the top-seed Aqeel Khan of Pakistan cruised his way into the second round with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Tzu-Yang Lin (Taipei).

Playing his first match in India this season after a tour of Morocco and Europe, Mahesh Bhupathi Tennis Academy trainee Akash Wagh, a qualifier, eased past Jaco Mathew 6-2, 6-3. Akash will take on P.C. Vignesh in the second round.

Joining Akash was old warhorse Vijay Kannan, who defeated France’s Cyril Hervieux 6-2, 6-4.

Ajay Selvaraj got his first ATP point with a hard-fought 7-6(3), 7-6(5) win over Vijay Sundar Prashanth in the first round.

The results (first round; Indians unless otherwise mentioned):

Vijay Kannan bt Cyril Hervieux (Fra) 6-2, 6-4; Kiran Nandakumar bt Kinshuk Sharma 6-0, 6-3; Sidharth Alapati bt Kaushik Raju 6-2, 6-3; P.C. Vignesh bt Vivek Shokeen 6-4, 7-6(5); Tatsuma Ito (Jpn) bt Rohan Gajjar 6-3, 6-3; Guilherme Ochiai ( Bra) bt Vishnu Vardhan 6-4, 6-4; Hsin-Han Lee (Tpe) bt Yannick Nelord 6-0, 6-4; Akash Wagh bt Jaco Mathew 6-2, 6-3; Aqeel Khan (Pak) bt Tzu-Yang Lin (Tpe) 6-3, 6-3; Ajay Selvaraj bt Vijay Sundar Prashanth 7-6(3), 7-6(5). — Sports Reporter
