Chennai: St. John’s, Besant Nagar, will conduct an under-14 inter-school cricket tournament in memory of Dr. G. Rajakumar, Founder, St. John’s group of schools, from July 25 at the Marina and the Cantonment HSS grounds. Speaking to presspersons, Ms. Anita Edison, administrator, St. John’s, said Dr. Rajakumar, her late father, was passionate about cricket and wanted to encourage young talent. She also acknowledged the contribution of coach A. Harrington in grooming the youngsters at the school. The matches will be of 30-overs-a-side till the final, which will be spread over two days. Leading city schools, including Don Bosco, Vidya Mandir, Hindu SSS and PS SSS, will be among the 22 teams taking part. P. Balasubramanian, IPS, will inaugurate the event at the Marina ground on Wednesday. Sathyabama University won the men’s basketball, volleyball and football titles in the South India inter-collegiate Pegasus-2007, an event organised by the Christian Medical College, Vellore recently. The results: Basketball: Sathyabama bt Al-Ameen, Bangalore 55-35; bt SBM Jain, Bangalore 67-28; (final) bt Loyola Chennai 80-71. Volleyball: Sathyabama bt Al-Ameen Bangalore 25-16, 30-28; bt Sacred Heart College, Thirupatthur 25-16, 25-23; (final) bt Surana College, Bangalore 25-21, 24-26, 25-23. The Kancheepuram District Chess Association, in association with Mount Chess Academy, will conduct the District under-13 championship for boys and girls on July 28 and 29 at Modern SSS, Nanganallur, Chennai-61. The Tiruvallur District Chess Association will conduct the District under-13 boys’ and girls’ championships, sponsored by the Venkateswara Educational Trust, at the Venkateswara MHSS on July 29 and 30.
