Howard: not for me to say if Haneef will be released
P.S. Suryanarayana
SINGAPORE: Australian Prime Minister John Howard on Tuesday declined to say whether Mohammed Haneef should be set free in the wake of “inconsistencies” highlighted by lawyers in the case against the Indian doctor.
Talking to journalists in Perth, he said: “This case should be investigated and handled by the police and the Director of Public Prosecutions. It is not for me to say whether he [Dr. Haneef] should be let go.”
Refusing to order a Senate probe into the “bungling,” he said: “Senate inquiry? The case hasn’t been properly heard yet.”
Queensland Premier Peter Beattie had called for a probe at the political level.
The doctor faces a committal hearing on charges that he provided material support to a terrorist organisation, which included two of his distant cousins who later became suspects in the “terror plots” in Britain.
Dr. Haneef has denied any wrongdoing and the federal police have clarified that he was not being investigated for any terrorist plot in Australia.
