Government has ruined PDS: BJP

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has charged the United Progressive Alliance Government with destroying the public distribution system (PDS) citing lesser offtake of cereals during 2005-2007.

In the last two years, the offtake of cereals from the PDS has been 100-lakh tonne less than in 2004-05, the party said.

If the Government had bungled in wheat imports this year, it had such poor quality wheat last year that even the poorest sections of society did not lift it from the ration shops, party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

He demanded an inquiry into the quality specifications for wheat for last year’s imports.
