International film fete from July 27

Thiruvananthapuram: The 12th Trivandrum International Film Festival (TIFF 2007), organised by the Chalachitra Film Society, begins here on July 27 at Kalabhavan theatre.

Noted film-maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan will inaugurate the festival. The Director of Iran Cultural Centre will be the guest of honour at this year’s festival. The inaugural film will be ‘Un Dimanche a Kigali’ (Just This Part is Worth It) from Canada.

The World Cinema section will feature 14 films from 12 countries, produced during 2000-06 and which were screened at various international film festivals. These include ‘Hotel Rwanda’ (A. Africa-Italy-UK, 2005), ‘Motorcycle Diaries’ (Argentina-Spain, 2005), ‘Constant Gardener’ (UK-Germany, 2005), ‘Habana Blues’ (Cuba-Spain, 2005), ‘Down Fall’ (Germany, 2004), ‘The Third Wave’ (Sweden-Finland, 2004), ‘Enemy of the People’ (Norway, 2006), ‘Do Not Disturb’ (Netherlands, 2000), ‘Swimming Pool’ (France-UK, 2003), ‘Bank Ban,’ ‘Sacra Carona’ (Hungary), ‘Provoked’ (UK, 2006) and ‘Ben’s Biography’ (Israel, 2003).

The Focus section will feature Iranian cinema, including a retrospective of Alireza Raieesian. The films which will be screened include ‘Mama’s Guest’ (Dariush Mehrjui), ‘Love Without Boundaries’ (Poran Deralsjamdeh), ‘Paradise is Somewhere Else’ (Abdolrassul Golbon) and ‘The Insane Flew Away’ (Ahmad-Reza Motamedi).

Alireza Raieesian’s ‘The Journey,’ ‘Reyhaneh,’ ‘The Deserted Station,’ and ‘Havana Files’ are also being screened.

The five films being screened under Asian Cinema will be presented by the directors of the films. Those chosen under the section are ‘Missed Call,’ ‘Nital,’ ‘Drishtantham,’ ‘Mahotsav’, and ‘Baadha.’

One of the popular sections in the festival is the Oscar series. Film lovers can expect to see 2007 Oscar and Golden Globe winners like ‘United 93,’ ‘Click,’ ‘Crash,’ ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,’ ‘Pursuit of Happyness,’ and ‘Marie Antoinette.’

The festival office will start functioning at Kalabhavan theatre from 10 a.m. on Thursday.
