Vehicle movement on Bijapur-Bangalore Road hit as agitators set fire to tyres

ANGRY PROTEST: Residents protesting against poor civic amenities by blocking a road in Bijapur on Wednesday.

BIJAPUR: Residents of Shantaveeranagar and adjoining localities on Wednesday resorted to a rasta roko on Bijapur–Bangalore Road halting vehicular traffic for over two hours.

They were protesting against poor civic amenities in their dwellings.

The protesters gathered under the banner of Shantaveeranagar Abhivriddhi Hitarakshana Vedike near Ibrahimpur Railway Gate, and blocked the road by putting boulders and thorny bushes. They also burnt tyres.

Assurance

The protest that began at 9 a.m. continued till 11.15 a.m. They cleared the road only after Municipal Commissioner L. Sonne Gowda arrived at the spot and assured them of development work. The protesters forced Mr. Sonne Gowda to take a round of the colony.

The vedike office-bearers Srinivas Patil and P.G. Kulkarni said the residents were forced to agitate after their repeated pleas for minimum civic amenities in their dwellings failed to yield result. The colony and adjoining localities had no drains, as a result of which the roads got waterlogged whenever it rained.

The muddy roads became slushy, and the residents were finding it difficult to walk.

Mr. Sonne Gowda promised them that roads would be asphalted after constructing drains.

Referring to the ongoing strike by the municipal employees, he said estimates would be done as soon as the stir was over. He would see that the work on drains would start within 15 days.

Mr. Sonne Gowda requested them to end the roadblocks.

People from Gurupadeshwara Nagar, Siddeshwar Badavane, Maruti Nagar, Radhakrishna Nagar, Ganesh Nagar, Venkateshwar Nagar, Thrimurthy Nagar and Ibrahimpur also took part in the protest.
