TDP backs fasting Left party leaders

Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: Telugu Desam Party leaders M.V.V.S. Murthi, Zaheer Ahmad and others expressed solidarity with the fasting CPI and CPI (M) leaders at their camp at Collectorate on Wednesday and described as genuine their land struggle.

The leaders offered full support to CPI district secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy, his counterpart in CPI (M) Ch. Narsinga Rao and six other activists whose fast-unto-death entered third day on Wednesday.

The Left parties will conduct picketing at the Collectorate in support of their demand for allotment of house-sites to the poor on Thursday.

Speaking at the camp, Mr. Murthi said the Congress Government had no concern for the poor except encouraging its leaders and activists in grabbing lands. He said house-sites were not being given to the poor though the Government was very liberal in selling huge extent of land to IT firms and industries at a throwaway price.

Dr. Zaheer Ahmad said the land struggle was a people’s struggle and the TDP was fully committed to implement land reforms if it came to power. He appreciated the Left leaders for their relentless struggle for a genuine cause.

Earlier, the CPI and CPI (M) activists staged a rasta roko separately at the Maddilapalem and Jagadamba junctions in support of the fasting leaders.

Meanwhile, several activists of the two parties who joined hands for mounting their pressure on the Government effectively, launched relay hunger strikes and fast-unto-death at Anakapalle, Koyyuru, Chintapalle, G.K. Veedhi, Narsipatnam, Araku and other places.
