MTC on the road to prosperity, says corporation official

Special Correspondent

New services from Chromepet launched

TAMBARAM: There was a turnaround in the performance of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation in one year thanks to the steps initiated by the State Government, its Managing Director R. Balasubramanian said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a function held to mark the launch of new direct services from Chromepet, he said that in June 2006, the MTC suffered a “cash loss of Rs. 10 crore.” And in June this year, it managed a “cash profit of Rs. 1.16 crore,” Mr. Balasubramanian said.

He attributed the improvement to the various steps taken by the State Government. Among them was the induction of new services. By the end of this year, new buses would comprise 60 per cent of the MTC’s fleet, replacing many of the buses that were between 12 and 14 years old.

In the suburban areas of Chennai coming within Kancheepuram district, 85 new buses were introduced on 39 new routes.

Buses to Mamallapuram from Tambaram were popular among commuters with the services netting an average daily collection of Rs. 15,090, Mr. Balasubramanian added. Labour Welfare Minister T. M. Anbarasan flagged off the new direct services from Chromepet ( G21) to Broadway via Mylapore and to Avadi (70B).

Listing the various development works being taken up in Pallavaram Municipality, Mr. Anbarasan said that in a year’s time, the local body would be developed as a model. Pallavaram Municipal Chairman E. Karunanidhi, councillors and members of civic groups were also present.
