dated July 26, 1957 : Prof. J.B.S. Haldane

Prof. J.B.S. Haldane, eminent British biologist, left London with his wife on July 24 to emigrate to India. “I want to live in a free country where there are no foreign troops based all over the place,” he said. “Yes, I do mean the Americans when I say foreign troops,” he added. The 64-year-old scientist and his wife, Dr. Helen Spurway, flew to Calcutta where they will work together in the Indian Statistical Institute. “My decision to leave this country was accelerated by the Suez affair,” he said.
