Journalists asked to play a constructive role

TIRUCHI: It was a role reversal for journalists of the city on Wednesday. In a rare public event of its kind, news hounds from dailies and satellite televisions played host to a galaxy of political leaders and a representative gathering of the society.

The occasion was the opening of the office of the Tiruchi Press Club.

The office, situated at the Thyagaraja Bhagavathar Mandram (Kalaiarangam) complex close to the Central Bus Stand, was declared open by Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin in the presence of Ministers K. N. Nehru, N.Selvaraj, Poongothai Aladi Aruna and U. Mathivannan.

The opening of the office marks the culmination of the efforts of the city journalists over the past several years.

In a brief address, Mr.Stalin observed that though the wait had been quite long, the efforts fructified at the appropriate time.

The Government did not believe in shying away from criticism and it was open to suggestions and healthy criticism, he said urging journalists to play a constructive role.

The Collector and chairperson of the committee Ashish Vachhani, the Mayor Sarubala R.Tondaiman, Chairperson of the Social Welfare Board Rokkaiah Malik, MLAs Anbil Periasamy, K.N.Sekaran, and M. Soundarapandian, Deputy Mayor M. Anbazhagan, members of the District Welfare Committee, senior officials from Central and State government agencies attended the function.

Some of the prominent veteran journalists of the city including S.Ramanarasu, V.Ganapathy and T.S.Paramanandam also graced the occasion.
