549 cases pending against panchayati raj officials Chief Minister opens annual meet of vigilance
BHUBANESWAR: Panchayati Raj department has stood top in the list of criminal cases filed by the State Vigilance department. A fact sheet presented at the two-day long 11th annual conference of the State Vigilance that got underway here on Wednesday said as many as 328 criminal cases had been lodged against officials involved in corruption in panchayati raj department since 2002."The high rate of corruption in panchayati raj department can be attributed to huge flow of funds under developmental schemes," said Abhaya, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Vigilance, while making a presentation at the conference here. Even during the first six months of the current fiscal, about 30 criminal cases were registered against officials in panchayati raj department. He said departmental proceedings were pending against officials in 549 cases in the same department. Similarly, revenue department followed the former with 245 criminal cases registered against government officials, said the IGP Vigilance. The other departments, where vigilance sleuth detected corruption cases, included cooperation (105), housing and urban development (99), water resources (94) and health and family welfare (86). Earlier, inaugurating the conference, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said those convicted in corruption or misappropriation cases by a court would be dismissed from service unless their conviction was stayed by a superior court. "Such dismissal is necessary. If a convicted public servant is allowed to hold office, it would impair morale of other persons working in such office," Mr. Patnaik said. DGP (Vigilance) G. C. Nanda said due to sincere efforts of prosecutors’, percentage of conviction in the courts was gradually improving. DSP of Sambalpur division Swaroop Kumar Parida was adjudged as the best investigating officer of the State for 2006.
