Civic officials launch drive against encroachments

Acting tough: Municipal staff removing encroachments over drainage system in Berhampur on Wednesday. –

BERHAMPUR: Extensive eviction and demolition of encroachments on the new bus stand- Gate Bazar road of the city was taken up by the officials on Wednesday. As per officials this drive is to clear all major drains of the city from encroachments and it would continue till next month. At a special meeting convened on July 17 by Berhampur Sub-Collector Govind Chandra Biswal the decision to launch special drive was taken. Police, municipal and Berhampur Development Authority officials attended the meeting.

The authorities have already earmarked the areas where demolition drive would be taken up. The eviction and demolition drive is being taken up on a war-footing to ensure smooth flow of the sewerage system of the city during rainy season. Recent continuous rains led to water logging in several areas of the city due to blockages in major drains.

According to officials the traders doing business in the illegal constructions made over the major drains were cautioned through public announcements a few days back. Sangram Panda, the tehsildar of Berhampur, who monitored the demolition work, said as the constructions it self were made illegally without proper permission of authorities there was no need for issuing notices for their demolition.
