BMC dumps garbage in front of two commercial buildings

Staff Reporter

Sequel to non-compliance of its ‘red notice’ to them

Two organisations allegedly piling up garbage

1,179 of 1,250 persons served red notice responded positively

BHUBANESWAR: Two attractive commercial buildings at heart of the Capital City were about to get crowded with customers on Wednesday morning when an unusual incident happened that took every onlooker by surprise.

Waste disposal squads of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) did exactly opposite what they had been doing all these years and dumped waste at the entrance gates of Forum Market and Marion Hotel at Satya Nagar area. The move was well calculated and aimed to publicly insult ‘habitual offenders’. The two organisations were allegedly piling up wastes on road used frequently by public despite being cautioned by BMC. "We had no other options left with us to make operators of Forum Market and Marion Hotel understand about municipality instructions. The dumping of wastes will surely serve warning as well as give positive messages to citizens of the city," BMC Commissioner Aparajita Sarangi said. Both the organisations were served preliminary notices under Section 343, 344, 649 of Orissa Municipality Corporation Act 2003 but they did not respond, Ms Sarangi said.

Flood of complaints

Even they did not pay heed to the Red Notice, which was final, she said. Corporator of Ward-26, Rajendra Acharya, nodded in agreement. "We had been flooded with public complaints about the dumping of garbage on that particular stretch of public road. We decided to give their garbage back to them and let them manage it," Mr. Acharya said. After the garbage was piled up in front of the Forum market, people started getting dispersed after being hit by the filthy smell emanating from waste and same also happened in front of Marion Hotel. Ms. Sarangi said the hotel management was given proposal to prepare a dumping yard inside its premise and BMC would was ready to transport those to its authorised yard but nothing happened. Later in the day, the management of both commercial organisations made own arrangements to lift the garbage and throw them in Sainik School dump yard. "We have so far served red notices on 1250 persons and organisations those were involved in these kind of public nuisances. Fortunately, 1179 have responded positively. We will surely take these offenders to task," the BMC Commissioner said.
