VILLUPURAM: District Collector Brajendra Navnit has proposed to organise an additional Grievance Day session at Karanur in Kallakurichi block on July 30. This will synchronise with the regular Monday session at Villupuram. It will be for the first time that such an event will be held outside the district headquarters. At Karanur, the Village Administrative Officer and panchayat clerks will receive petitions and forward them to the taluk office. The arrangement has been contemplated to redress people’s grievances in a speedy manner. Moreover, it will save time and money to the people. If proved successful, the Collector will organise similar sessions in other panchayats as well after August 15. Mr. Navnit revealed this at the Mass Contact Programme held at Karanur on Wednesday. He noted that in a single day, he received 520 petitions from Karanur seeking house site pattas, old age pension, marriage assistance and so on. The officials were collecting petitions well ahead of the scheduled session, for which the announcements were being made through tom-toming and vernacular dailies. Sanitation
Mr. Navnit said every month 12 Mass Contact Programmes were being organised in various parts of the district, and yet the people chose to give a swathe of petitions only to him. To avoid delay, they could hand over the petitions to the designated officials. Stressing the need for sanitation and personal hygiene, the Collector said 300 households in Karanur did not have toilets. Individual toilets could be constructed at a cost of Rs.3,000, for which the Government was extending a grant of Rs 1,700, banks were giving a loan of Rs 1,300 at four per cent interest, and the individuals would have to put in only Rs.300. He directed the officials and the local body to send a proposal for the construction of cement roads and pathway to the graveyard to be taken up under the Anna Marumalarchi Thittam. The Collector gave away benefits worth over Rs.12.21 lakh to 186 persons and sport kits to four teams. T. Udhayasuryan, MLA, RDO Govindan, panchayat union chairman A.P. Sivaraman and panchayat president S. Ramachandran participated.
