EVICTION: An encroachment being removed on Rettai Pilliar Kovil Street in Tiruvannamalai on Wednesday.
TIRUVANNAMALAI: Several buildings, mostly commercial-cum-residential structures, have been demolished in a major eviction operation carried out jointly by the municipality, the Highways and Revenue Departments in Tiruvannamalai from July 9.
These structures had been constructed over the past several years encroaching on the Chengam Road forming part of the Girivalam path in the temple town. Several shops encroaching on the Rettai Pilliar Kovil Street were razed to the ground on Wednesday.
T. Natarajan, Commissioner of Vellore Municipality, said that the drive followed the decision of the district administration and the municipality to remove the encroachments and widen the “girivalam” route to benefit lakhs of pilgrimsvisiting here on “pournami” days for the “Girivalam” (circumambulation of the sacred Annamalai hills).
The eviction has resulted in the exposure of several small ancient temples and mandapams (halls), which were hidden over the years. One such temple was the Markandeya Temple on Chengam Road.
Tiruvannamalai Revenue Divisional Officer Valarmathi said that the eviction was taken up on the highway, land belonging to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department as well as on the municipal road, all of which form part of the “girivalam” route.
While the eviction was currently being carried out on the Chengam Road and Rettai Pilliar Kovil Street in the municipality, the eviction in Athiyendal, Anaipirandhan, Adi Annamalai, Adaiyur and Vengikkal panchayats would be taken up later, Ms. Valarmathi added.
