Government drivers on token fast

Special Correspondent

Puducherry: Drivers of various departments of the Government and local bodies observed a token fast near the Chief Secretariat here on Wednesday in support of their demands. President of the Association of Drivers A.P. Raja, who led the fast, said in a release that a number of their demands were hanging in the balance for years. Mr. Raja said that the Government was delaying promotion of heavy motor vehicle drivers eligible to be elevated to the rank of Special Grade, Grade I and II.

Although the Chief Minister conceded the plea that the drivers in municipalities and commune panchayats be sanctioned sanitary care allowance, nothing had been done. The 40 driver posts vacant in various departments should fill them by absorbing the drivers engaged on daily wage basis. They objected to the Government’s utilising private sources for transport needs of the statutory bodies and departments.
