Puducherry: Secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam A. Anbalagan has charged Members of Parliament V. Narayanasamy (Congress) and M. Ramadoss (Pattali Makkal Katchi) with “hoodwinking” students in admission to MBBS course in private medical colleges in the Union Territory. In a release here on Wednesday, Mr. Anbalagan said that there was unchecked conversion of private medical colleges, that were initially affiliated to the Pondicherry University, into “deemed-to-be-universities”, and this status was aimed at closing doors to local students. These colleges were started only with the Puducherry Government permission. The Members of Parliament should have intervened before these colleges were converted into “universities” by asking the Union Human Resources Development and Health Ministries to refrain from according the status to them. Instead of taking steps to arrest the trend, the members were coming out with press statements to criticise the Government and feign to be champions of the students. Mr. Anbalagan said that no medical college was prepared to share 50 per cent of the seats with the Government. Mr. Anbalagan said that mere press statements by the MPs would be no consolation for the students left in the cold. There was also lack of concrete measures on the part of Government to protect students, he added.
