There are 4,160 such groups with 66,550 members They are involved in dairying and other activities
DAVANGERE: Self-help groups (SHGs) in Davangere district have made a savings of Rs. 18 crore as on date, said Jayaswamy, Deputy Director of Women and Child Development Department. Furnishing details of the performances of the self-help groups in the district at a self-help groups planning coordination committee meeting here on Wednesday, Mr. Jayaswamy said that there were 4,160 such groups in the district with a membership of 66,550. Members of SHGs made their savings in the range of Rs. 5 to Rs. 50 with the groups they are affiliated to, he said and added that SHGs were involved in various economic activities earning income. SHGs are involved in dairying, manufacturing phenyl, plate and cups of arecanut leaves, vermin compost and various other allied activities, Mr. Jayaswamy said. A large number of women had become economically strong now, he added. Different banks had provided Rs. 18 crore loans to SHGs some time ago and the SHGs had repaid over Rs. 13 crore. Deputy Commissioner M.B. Dyaberi, who presided over the meeting, directed Mr. Jayaswamy to send the repayment statement to all banks so that they (banks) did not hesitate to lend loans to SHGs in future. He said that in the previous meetings when he had asked banks to provide loans to SHGs, some banks had expressed reservation and doubted the repayment capacity of SHGs. The Government has given Rs. 5,000 to each SHG and it had been kept as a revolving fund. As many as 77 self-help groups have collected over Rs. 75,000 each and they have been given an incentive of Rs. 15, 000 from the Government. Mr. Jayaswamy told the meeting that a SHG bhavan was being built at a cost of Rs. 15 lakh and Davangere MP Siddeshwar had given an amount of Rs. 2 lakh to the bhavan under the LAD (Local Area Development) fund. Commissioner of Davangere City Corporation Pranalinga Shivasali offered to supply free hotel waste and other useful garbage to the fields where the SHGs proposed to manufacture vermin compost. The Deputy Commissioner said that five per cent seats should be reserved for handicapped persons in all schemes and programmes of the Government and issued directions to all the departments in this regard. The Government has issued a circular to this effect, he said. Deputy Secretary of Davangere Zilla Panchayat Rudrappa, Deputy Superintendent of Police Murthy and Deputy Director of Horticulture Parashivamurthy were present.
