HYDERABAD: The State Police Department will soon get a helicopter for reaching far-flung areas quickly and taking up search and rescue operations during major incidents. The Central Government has given its nod to the Police Department to acquire a chopper and orders have already been placed in this regard. The chopper, to be used for evacuating injured police personnel and civilians whenever there are major incidents, will be shared by the States affected by the Maoist problem, Director-General of Police M.A. Basith said. Mr. Basith who spoke about the developments in the department when some reporters met him on Wednesday said the department was, however, not in favour of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as the cost-benefit ratio worked out to be very less. Moreover, the UAVs would be utilised by army for real time operations and would be helpful in areas which offer no scope for cover. Responding to queries about security at IT establishments, he said the industry would not be affected, but human resources, particularly those in key positions, were vulnerable. Though there was threat to security related establishments like research institutions, they were adequately protected. On Maoists’ activities, he said the department had succeeded in bringing the situation under control.
