‘Land assignment Act not for the rich’ High Court Round-up

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday held that the Kerala Land Assignment Act and Rules were intended to protect encroachers who were landless and downtrodden.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice H.L. Dattu and Justice K.T. Sankaran said the Act and Rules were not intended for enriching persons who had already held extensive land. The court made the observation while dismissing a petition filed by Varkey Jacob from Kottayam against the orders rejecting his plea to assign the land adjoining to his property under the provisi ons of the Act. The court said the mighty people did not co me under the benevolent protective umbrella of the Act.

Suspension stayed

Justice A.K. Basheer ordered that the order suspending P.T. Mohammed, Registrar of the Calicut University, from service be kept in abeyance for 10 days.

CBSE textbooks

The National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) has filed a petition seeking to extend the time granted by the High Court for the supply of textbooks of the CBSE courses till the end of July, 2007. It was stated that the main textbooks for classes X and XII had been printed in adequate numbers and supplied.
