Bangalore: Admitting that total Prohibition is an uphill task as the “Government has to face stiff opposition not only from sections of society, but also from a section in the legislative bodies,” Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa says he is in favour of a State-wide debate on the issue. Replying to Vimala Gowda (BJP) in the Legislative Council on Wednesday, Mr. Yediyurappa said such a debate would help in knowing public view on the issue. He said the Government had not looked into the question of banning gutka. It was also yet to ascertain whether children had become addicted to gutka, as complained by Ms. Gowda. It had come to the notice of the Government that some persons in certain regions such as Gulbarga, Raichur and Belgaum were involved in selling different brands of IMFL at fanciful rates. It had instructed the authorities concerned to initiate stringent action against such unscrupulous liquor vendors, he said. From July 1 to 22 , the Department of Excise seized 7,96,074 litres of illicit arrack, including wash, registered 715 cases and arrested 254 people.
